Title: Adding Music Narration to a PowerPoint Presentation

1
Adding Music Narration to a PowerPoint
Presentation
  • This handy guide will get you adding in nifty
music to your PowerPoint presentations like a pro

By Taylor Morris, the Real Pro
2
Get the Darned Music
  • This is the most difficult step by far. The first
thing you need to do is put the music onto the
computer. If you already have the music on your
H-Drive, you can skip this step. If the music is
on a flash drive, then this will be much easier.
If its on a CD, then read on.

3
Copying Music From a CD
  • Insert the CD into the drive (if you cant do
this, you really shouldnt be using a computer).
  • When the Autoplay window comes up, select Rip
Music from CD Using Windows Media Player
  • When Windows Media Player (WMP) comes up, it will
ask you if you want to keep or change your rip
setting. YOU WANT TO CHANGE THESE. If you dont,
you could spend a lot of time hunting the music
    files down.
  • Change the Rip Path to anywhere on your H-Drive
(somewhere youll be able to find it easily)

4
Change Formatting Settings
5
  • When you finish changing the settings, it will
start to rip on its own. You can either wait a
long time for it to rip the entire CD, or
    immediately click Stop Rip.
  • Make sure that only the song you want to use if
    checked.
  • Once you are certain, click Start Rip.
  • The song will be sent to where you specified it
to go on your H-Drive, located in a folder with
the artists name (or just Unknown Artist)

6
If Youre Using a Flash Drive
  • Youve got it easy. Simply transfer the file from
your flash drive to your H-Drive, and laugh at
all the people who werent cool enough to use
    their own flash drive.

7
Putting the Music Into PowerPoint
  • See, that wasnt so bad, was it? Everything from
here is the fun stuff of actually making that
music play, and getting everything to work just
the way you want it to.

8
Insert Music
  • Open your PowerPoint presentation and set it to
    the first slide.
  • Under the Insert Menu, go to Movies and Sounds,
and from there, Sound from File.
  • Find your sound file, select it, and click OK to
    add it in.
  • Select it to start automatically.

9
Timing
  • Right-Click the icon and select Edit Sound
Object. Check both of the options it gives.
  • In the Slide Show menu, select Custom Animation.
If youve already done all of your animations,
the music file should be at the bottom of the
list. Move it to the top.
  • VERY IMPORTANT Set EVERYTHING to start With
Previous. If you dont, then nothing will happen
in your slide show until the music is done
    playing.

10
  • Click the drop-down box for your music and go to
    Effect Options.
  • In the Effect tab, change Stop Playing to After
(The number of slides in your presentation) Slides

11
Timing the Rest of the Presentation
  • Now all your animations are going to go off at
    once we dont want that.
  • For EVERY animation after the music file, open
the drop-down menu for it and select Timing.
  • Set the Delay to the number of seconds you want
between the slide coming on, and the animation
    playing.
  • For a title that starts one second after the
slide comes on, set the delay to 1. For an
animation that starts one second after the title,
set the delay to 2. And so on and so forth.

12
Animation Speeds
  • Some animations move faster than others. You will
need to play with the speeds of your animations
to make sure that one animation starts going
before the previous one is even done.
  • Theres no set way of doing this, but a good rule
of thumb is to set all animations to medium,
watch the show, and adjust each animation as
    necessary
  • You now should have your music go nice and
    smoothly.

13
Adding in Narration
  • Important to note if you are using narration,
you will not need to change the timing for how
your slides go from slide to slide. Powerpoint
will automatically time your slides for you.
Pretty handy, no? However, before you narrate,
you should have all of your slides set to advance
to the next slide when you click.

14
Get Ready to Narrate
  • Make sure a microphone is plugged in to your
computer. Ms. Spallina will provide you with
    one.
  • You should have your narration notes in your
Powerpoint. Copy these notes for each slide into
a Word file and print it out.

15
Narrating
  • In the Slide Show menu, go to Record Narration
  • Adjust your microphone as you see fit.
  • Your Presentation will now play. Simply narrate
into the microphone, advancing your slides as
    necessary

16
  • If you did this correctly, all of your slides
will now have narration embedded into them.

(Times shown here do not reflect the times that
your narrations will be.)
17
Congratulations!
  • It took you long enough, and you probably had to
yell at your computer a few times, but you should
now have a Powerpoint presentation that is as
pleasing to the ears as it is to the eyes

Unless, of course, you were a complete dolt and
made a horrible looking presentation and gave it
terrible music.
