Title: How Do We See People with Disabilities
1How Do We See People with Disabilities?
2Do We See What They Cant Do?
3Do We See What They Can Do?
4 Or do we just see them as people?
5Forget what you thought you knew about
disabilities
6See each person as an individual
7And only then can you see their potential
8As Nurses we are not taught about people with
disabilities
- Basic Nursing education consists of learning
about illness and how to care for people with
different types of diagnosis. - So how should a nurse care for someone with
different abilities?
9It is not until those preconceived ideas are left
behindthat understanding can be achieved
10And Nursing Care Can Begin
11It is this unlearning that providesthe freedom
to understand
- By looking at each person with an open mind, it
is easier to learn more about their abilities and
potential needs
12Caring for People with Different Abilities
- Ask questions when caring for people with
different abilities. - Explain what you do or do not know.
- Most people would rather explain their abilities
or limitations than have a care giver pretend
that they know.
13Respect and Dignity
- Let the client take the lead.
- It is important to ask how you can help.
14Dreams do not stop with a disability They just
Change
15An Athlete at Heart Will Always be an Athlete at
Heart
16The Sport May Just Change
17Nursing Etiquette
- Never jump in to help when you feel a person is
struggling a bit. What may look to be a struggle
to you could be an every day occurrence to that
person. - Always ask if a person needs help. Do not assume
help is needed.
18No Matter What the Disability Kids Just Want to
be Kids
19So why cant two people with the exact same
disability have the same plan of care?
- The journey is different for everyone.
- Differences in coping, support systems and
motivation changes the individual response. - People are not all the same no matter what
culture they belong to.
20If you enjoyed dancingthe music still plays
21- For some getting through the day may be a
challenge, while others look to be challenged in
other ways..
22Patient Centered Care Is
- when there has been active listening,
- when you have been present for them,
- and when all clients are seen as unique whatever
their abilities are.
23The Beauty of Having a New Perspective each
time
24- Provides a clarity of mind to learn and
concentrate on a more holistic approach. - Provides an expanded understanding.
- Provides the Care Giver the ability to learn
differently with each experience. -
