Title: How Do We See People with Disabilities

1
How Do We See People with Disabilities?
2
Do We See What They Cant Do?
3
Do We See What They Can Do?
4
Or do we just see them as people?
5
Forget what you thought you knew about
disabilities
6
See each person as an individual
7
And only then can you see their potential
8
As Nurses we are not taught about people with
disabilities
  • Basic Nursing education consists of learning
about illness and how to care for people with
    different types of diagnosis.
  • So how should a nurse care for someone with
    different abilities?

9
It is not until those preconceived ideas are left
behindthat understanding can be achieved
10
And Nursing Care Can Begin
11
It is this unlearning that providesthe freedom
to understand
  • By looking at each person with an open mind, it
is easier to learn more about their abilities and
    potential needs

12
Caring for People with Different Abilities
  • Ask questions when caring for people with
    different abilities.
  • Explain what you do or do not know.
  • Most people would rather explain their abilities
or limitations than have a care giver pretend
    that they know.

13
Respect and Dignity
  • Let the client take the lead.
  • It is important to ask how you can help.

14
Dreams do not stop with a disability They just
Change
15
An Athlete at Heart Will Always be an Athlete at
Heart
16
The Sport May Just Change
17
Nursing Etiquette
  • Never jump in to help when you feel a person is
struggling a bit. What may look to be a struggle
to you could be an every day occurrence to that
    person.
  • Always ask if a person needs help. Do not assume
    help is needed.

18
No Matter What the Disability Kids Just Want to
be Kids
19
So why cant two people with the exact same
disability have the same plan of care?
  • The journey is different for everyone.
  • Differences in coping, support systems and
    motivation changes the individual response.
  • People are not all the same no matter what
    culture they belong to.

20
If you enjoyed dancingthe music still plays
21
  • For some getting through the day may be a
challenge, while others look to be challenged in
    other ways..

22
Patient Centered Care Is
  • when there has been active listening,
  • when you have been present for them,
  • and when all clients are seen as unique whatever
    their abilities are.

23
The Beauty of Having a New Perspective each
time
24
  • Provides a clarity of mind to learn and
concentrate on a more holistic approach.
  • Provides an expanded understanding.
  • Provides the Care Giver the ability to learn
    differently with each experience.
