Title: Theocidy

1
Theocidy
  • The Existence of Evil and the Goodness of God

2
Nomos
  • In the sociology of religion of Peter L. Berger,
nomoi are meaningful orders or worldviews of
    individuals.
  • We want, perhaps need, to believe that our world
has meaning and purpose and that we an
understand why things happen by uncovering the
laws on which the world operates.

3
Anomic
  • Random, meaningless without explanation. Threaten
    the nomos.

4
Varieties of Evil

others by human beingsmuch of it pointless.

Karma
  • Non-theistic view operates like the natural law
    of gravity impersonally and automatically.
  • Theistic divine being oversees the law of karma
although the divine being may not be able to
    brake the law.

20
Dharma
  • The duty appropriate to ones caste. Progress to
the next life depends upon fulfilling ones
    obligations.

21
Sa?sara
  • Wheel of Rebirth an ongoing cycle of birth,
death, and rebirth is assumed as a fact of
nature. Most of these traditions, in their
evolved forms, regard Sa?sara negatively, as a
fallen condition which is to be escaped.

Millenarianism
  • having to do with the appearance of a messiah and
    a 1,000 year cycle.
  • Millenarian groups typically claim that the
current society and its rulers are corrupt,
unjust, or otherwise wrong. They therefore
believe they will be destroyed soon by a powerful
force. The harmful nature of the status quo is
    always considered intractable without the
    anticipated dramatic change.
  • In Medieval millenarianism the world was seen as
controlled by demons and even up to the
    nineteenth century Chinese millenarianism used
something like this motif, but with "demon"
having a slightly different cultural connotation.
  • In the modern world economic rules or vast
conspiracies are seen as generating oppression.
Only dramatic change will change the world and
change will be brought about, or survived, by a
group of the devout and dedicated. In most
millenarian scenarios, the disaster or battle to
come will be followed by a new, purified world in
which the true believers will be rewarded.

Varities of Islam
  • Sunni
  • Most muslims belong to this branch
  • Believe that any member of the tribe of Mohamed
    can rule as Caliphs.
  • Shia

  • Claim only members of the Prophets family can
    rule as Caliphs

Revelations
  • When the sixth seal is broken, there will be a
violent earthquake and the sun will go as black
as sackcloth the moon turn red as blood, and the
stars of the sky will fall onto the earth like
figs dropping from a tree in a high wind. The sky
itself will disappear like a scroll being rolled
up and all the mountains and islands will be
    shaken from their places.

33
Eschatology
  • From the Greek ?s?at?? meaning "last" -logy it
is a part of theology and philosophy concerned
with the final events in the history of the world
or the ultimate destiny of human kind, commonly
phrased as the end of the world. In many
religions, the end of the world is a future event
prophesied in sacred texts or folklore. More
    broadly, eschatology may encompass related
concepts such as the Messiah or Messianic Age,
    the afterlife, and the soul.
