2Mohannad Barakat GMC has co-written an article on
Multilevel Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Decompression -
Midterm Outcome Using a Modified Hinge Osteotomy
Technique. The article is based on the study
which was carried out looking at functional
outcome and post procedure translational
segmental instability after multi-level lumbar
decompression using hinge osteotomy technique.
3The hinge osteotomy technique involves unilateral
subperiosteal muscle dissection with osteotomy of
the base of the spinous processes, thereby
preserving the integrity of the posterior
elements. The objective of the study was to show
the results of this technique clinically and
radiologically.
4In conclusion, Mohannad Barakat GMC has written
that the study has described a hinge osteotomy
technique with complete laminectomy for lumbar
spine multilevel decompression, allowing for
excellent visualization and full decompression
bilaterally.
5Results have shown excellent outcome with 90
successful surgical outcome, a significant mean
reduction in leg pain scores, significant
improvement in functional status, and
symptom-specific well being and general well
being with a significant reduction in the
oswestry disability index scores.
6Decompression of multi-level lumbar spine
stenosis using the unilateral approach with the
hinge osteotomy technique is a safe approach for
multi-level stenosis, with good outcome and no
evidence of significant segmental translational
spinal instability.
