Correct capturing the sound at the source is
important. It makes mixing easier. It just makes
your record sound better in general. Of course,
this advice applies to recording acoustic
guitars. So, lets talk about good microphones
for recording acoustics.

Small Diaphragm Condensers  these microphones
are usually where its at for recording acoustic
guitars. They capture the transient attack of
acoustics and are ideal for close micing. Large
Diaphragm Condensers  they are excellent for
recording just about anything

Dynamics  You can get a great acoustic guitar
tone with this mic, though it might not have the
high end of a condenser.  Ribbons  Ribbon mics
are also a great choice for acoustic guitars,
though not quite as obvious as a condenser. They
are renowned for their smooth sound.

Pickups  Acoustic-electric pickups are pretty
common in guitars and you might have a guitarist
insist that you dont need to spend time with
mics. Just plug and play direct. Most
of them sound terrible. That doesnt mean
acoustic pickups have no use. The more expensive
the pickup is, the more likely youll be
able to get a decent tone from it.

give you a great acoustic guitar
recording. Youll probably never find the best
acoustic guitar microphone. But there are
hundreds that get the job done and make beautiful
recordings. What is probably going to work best
for you is the microphone that you already own.
But you need to know how to use it.
