A GOOD WAY TO IMPROVE BALANCING SKILLS
  • If you want to give your children a thrill for
New Year, you may want to buy them a hoverboard.
This is a contraption on two wheels with a place
in the middle to put your feet. It is an ideal
present to get children to balance properly.
  • One of these boards is called the Classic Swegway
which is an ideal way to get around, both for
    beginners and more accomplished users.

3
  • Apart from a rechargeable battery they also have
blue LED lights so that people can see you coming
when you career along a walkway.
  • As with all mechanical toys, this machine comes
with a manual. I know boys dont bother with
these too much, but because there is an art to
operate these boards safely it is well worth
    reading before you start.
  • It goes without saying that the package also
contains a charger as batteries somehow have to
be charged for it to work properly. You can also
opt for a Bluetooth and key upgrade so that you
can listen to your favourite music whilst you are
    motoring along.

4
  • These self-balancing scooters are not allowed to
be ridden on roads and pavements according to the
British police. You are, therefore, mainly
confined to private property. This is a little
difficult as the sales of these balancing
scooters have hit the roof. This is partly due
to celebrities using them to get themselves
    around.
  • They have been likened to skateboards on which
the user propels himself forward or sideways by
    leaning forwards or backwards.

  • The problem according to UK law is that they are
classed as motor vehicles hence the ban on
pavements, but because they do not have to be
licenced they are also not allowed on roads.
  • Since these boards can only be ridden on private
property it seems prudent that if your neighbour
has a piece of land you ask for permission first
before using it to practice the technique.
  • Since there is an art to riding a Swegway, it is
important to wear appropriate clothing so that
you do not harm yourself if the thing should run
    away with itself.

7
  • There is a chance that if you live in a rural
community the police may look sideway if they are
there if you take your scooter to the shops to do
some shopping. This is certainly not possible in
cities such as London where pavements at this
time of the year are full of people and the
    obstacles are too great.
  • Having read a bit more about these rules, it
seems to me that mobility scooters and battery
powered wheelchairs should also be banned from
pavements. Although I feel sorry that the
elderly need to use this form of transport to get
around, they are every bit as annoying for able
    bodied persons.

8
  • It seems to me that a separate bicycle kind of
road could be developed to accommodate scooter
    riders.
