Photography Basics 5 Essential Camera Settings
2
INTRODUCTION
Modern DSLRs and other cameras are equipped with
a variety of features. It is important to have a
clear understanding of these basic features to
take captivating pictures. Utilizing the gear
appropriately can positively impact the
photograph.
3
Aperture
The aperture is the opening that lets light
through. This opening can be adjusted to increase
or reduce the aperture. The larger the aperture,
the more light will be able to pass through.
Usually, a narrower or a smaller aperture is used
when there is too much light. Additionally, a
small aperture increases the focus in a
photograph.
4
ISO
Simply put, ISO is the sensitivity of your camera
to the available light. Lowering the ISO reduces
your camera's sensitivity to light. An increased
ISO picks up more detail in a dark photograph
without widening the aperture beyond your
requirements.
5
Shutter Speed
The shutter speed of a camera determines the
duration of exposure of the camera's sensor to
light. Usually, the shutter speed is a fraction
of a second. For example, while capturing rapid
motion, you might need to use a shutter speed of
approximately 1/300th of a second. However, while
capturing the image of a stationary object, a
shutter speed of 1/30th of a second can be
adequate.
6
White Balance
White balance is associated with the color of the
light. A camera can detect the different color
tones of different light sources. An accurately
set white balance will produce an image that
looks natural. For beginners, using the auto
white balance can generate the best results.
7
Depth of Field
The depth of field is the distance between the
farthest and the nearest objects in the scene. It
helps in determining the focus and the sharpness
of the image. It helps in emphasizing the subject
and blurring the background.
8
CONCLUSION
Understanding these features can help in
perfecting the image. The minute imperfections
can be edited in Photoshop. If you live in Dubai,
you an consider enrolling in Photoshop classes in
Dubai for this purpose.
