  • Preeclampsia is a condition that typically starts
after the 20th week of pregnancy and is related
to increased blood pressure and protein in the
mothers urine (as a result of kindly problems.)
Preeclampsia affects the placenta, and it can
affect the mothers kidney. Liver, and brain.
When preeclampsia causes seizures, the condition
in known as eclampsia the second leading causes
of maternal death in the U. S. Preeclampsia is
also a leading causes of fetal complications,
which include low birth weight, premature birth,
    and stillbirth.
  • Key signs of Preeclampsia are increased blood
pressure and protein in the urine (proteinuria).
Other symptoms that seem to occur with
    preeclampsia include persistent headaches,
blurred vision or sensitivity to light and
abdominal pain. All of these sensations can be
caused by other disorders they can also occur in
healthy pregnancies, Regular visits with your
doctor help him or her to track your blood
pressure and level of protein in your urine, to
order and analyze blood tests that detect signs
of preeclampsia, and to monitor fetal development
    more closely.

  • Effects of Preeclampsia on the Foetus
  • Preeclampsia, if left untreated, may causes a
number of problems for the fetus. The fetus may
be underweight. The fetus may to be delivered
prematurely. If born early, the baby could be
weakened by poor nutrition and a shortage of
oxygen. In severe cases, the baby may be
stillborn. When the increase the blood pressure
occurs late in pregnancy and the baby is
delivered near the 36th week, the newborn is not
likely to be affected because the baby is almost
fully developed. If preeclampsia is detected in
mild stage and mothers blood pressure is
controlled by bed rest and drugs, the doctor may
prescribe to relax the mother, she can usually
expect to have an unaffected baby. In general, if
the mother is well nourished, if she follows her
doctors advice about bed rest, and if her blood
pressure dose not get too high, the fetus should
    not be adversely affected.

4
  • Effect on the mother
  • Extremely high level of blood pressure in the
mother that persist without medical care can
result in injuries to the organs. Most often
affected are the kidneys, brain, eyes, and liver.
The heart may be weakened from the stress of
pumping the arterioles are smaller. The placenta
may tear away from the wall of the uterus (a
    condition called abruptio placenta) before
delivery. If the blood pressure rises to very
high level and persists, seizures can occur. At
this stage, the problem is called eclampsia.
Severs cases usually involve women who do not see
doctors until late in pregnancy. By this time the
blood pressure has already risen to high levels
    and is harder to control.
  • How can women with high blood pressure prevent
    problems during pregnancy?
