ClOUDS VOCABULARY
  • humidity the amount of water vapor in the air
  • dew point the temperature at which
    condensations begins
  • dew moisture that forms on the ground
  • fog clouds that form near or on the ground

3
WATER CYCLE CLOUDS
  • First, water evaporates
  • Then water in the atmosphere begins to condense
    to form clouds
  • Some clouds will eventually precipitate

4
HOW DO CLOUDS FORM?
  • Clouds form when water vapor in the air becomes
    liquid water or ice crystals.
  • Water condenses on small particles or dust
suspended in the air to form a cloud

5
3 TYPES OF CLOUDS
  • Cumulus heap usually are taller than they
    are wide
  • Stratus layered are wider than they are
    tall
  • Cirrus wispy feathered clouds

Which type is this cloud?

7
Stratus
  • Stratus low lying grey clouds with no
    precipitation
  • Nimbostratus low lying grey clouds with
    precipitation
  • Altostratus higher altitude layered clouds

Cirrus
  • Cirrus clouds are high altitude feathery clouds
    that represent fair weather
  • cirrostratus thin sheet like clouds that let
the sun or moon shine through
  • cirrocumulus small cotton ball shaped clouds
    that looked rippled

Cumulus
  • Cumulus fluffy clouds that often have a flat
base and rounded top with vertical development
usually a sign of good weather
  • Cumulonimbus tall towering clouds with a flat
base and anvil shaped top that signals a
    thunderstorm building
  • Altocumulus higher altitude cumulus clouds

Precipitation
  • Precipitation is any form of water that falls
    from clouds.
  • Droplets must grow heavy enough for rain or snow
    to fall from the clouds

15
Types of Precipitation
  • rain water that is at least above 0C
  • sleet rain falls then freezes before it hits
    the ground
  • freezing rain rain that falls then freezes
    after it hits the ground
  • hail round ice pellets from cumulonimbus clouds
  • snow water vapor forms snow inside a cloud

Measuring Weather
  • thermometer
  • anemometer
  • rain gauge
  • barometer
  • weather vane
  • measures temperature
  • measures wind speed
  • measures rainfall
  • measures air pressure
  • measures wind direction
