Title: INCIDENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM TO MAKE HIGHWAYS SAFER

1
INCIDENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM TO MAKE HIGHWAYS
SAFER The NHAI is continuing to step up their
efforts by introducing an effective Incident
Management System (IMS) on Indian National
Highways for the expeditious detection of
accidents and incidents like traffic management
or break down of vehicles on highways. The launch
is scheduled for Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh in
the foreseeable future. The IMS will cover more
than 11,000 kilometers across Rajasthan and Uttar
Pradesh. These stretches will be backed by
sufficient deployment of ambulances, toe-away
cranes and patrolling vehicles at consistent
intervals as well as GPS monitoring. They will be
operational 24X7, especially at the
accident-prone locations to diminish the response
time during emergencies. Basic life support will
be provided to casualties before immobilizing
them to nearest health centers. As stated by the
Honourable Chairman of NHAI, Shri Deepak Kumar
"Every year, around 1.5 lakh people die on
Indian roads. Our target is to save lives in the
golden hour (the first hour after an accident)
by making all the possible facilities available
for the highway users." NHAIs 24X7 National
Highways Helpline is already operational for the
highway users. All the calls routed to 1033 are
received and managed by regional command centers
that are set up to provide real-time incident
tracking and rapid response. Toll plaza call
centers will provide assistance in identifying
the exact location of the accident according to
the details received from the caller. Driving
down Indian highways could be a much safer
experience in the near future as the Government
is taking substantial steps towards this project
in particular. According to reports, Indian
highways had claimed over 52,000 lives in 2016,
which is an alarming number. It is fair to say
that the incident management system can
significantly contribute in bringing this figure
down by an astronomical margin. For more details
