  • Ascorbic acid, also known as vitamin C, is a
    water-soluble vitamin. It may be given to the
    body's tissues by dissolving in water, but
    because it cannot be effectively stored, it must
    be consumed daily through food or
    supplements.Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant
    that can disarm dangerous free radicals and aid
    in the healing of wounds and illnesses. It is
    required for the production of collagen, a
    fibrous protein found in connective tissue and
    woven throughout the neurological, immunological,
    bone, cartilage, blood, and other systems in the
    body. The vitamin aids in the production of
    various hormones and chemical messengers that are
    employed in the brain and nerves.

  • The antioxidant properties of vitamin C have
    drawn attention since studies have shown that the
    vitamin may combat free radicals, which, in
    excess, can harm cells. By promoting the activity
    of white blood cells, vitamin C also plays a role
    in the immune system of the body. Does this offer
    defence against specific diseases?

  • Higher intakes of vitamin C (through food or
    supplements) have been linked to a lower risk of
    developing cardiovascular disease and several
    malignancies, according to some epidemiological
    studies that track large populations of people
    over time. However, other studies have not
    confirmed this connection. Supplemental vitamin C
    has not been demonstrated to reduce the incidence
    of cancer or cardiovascular disease, according to
    randomised controlled trials. Since the results
    are inconsistent overall, it is impossible to
    develop a precise vitamin C recommendation for
    these disorders that is higher than the RDA.

  • It has also been suggested that vitamin C can
    guard against eye conditions like cataracts and
    macular degeneration. Although studies on humans
    have not consistently demonstrated a benefit from
    vitamin C supplementation, there seems to be a
    clear correlation between a high consumption of
    fruit and vegetables each day with a lower
    incidence of cataracts.

  • Despite being a common remedy, vitamin C's
    potential to combat colds hasn't materialised.
    Megadoses (more than 500 mg daily) of
    supplemental vitamin C had no discernible impact
    on the common cold, but may have a little
    positive impact in reducing the length and
    severity of colds in specific populations,
    according to reviews of multiple trials. Small
    studies indicate that the quantity of vitamin C
    in a common multivitamin taken at the beginning
    of a cold may improve symptoms, but for the
    ordinary individual, there is little evidence to
    support the effectiveness of megadoses or that
    they can prevent colds.
