• Introduction
• Adolescents experience biological, psychological
  and cognitive changes that begin during puberty
  and continue throughout adolescence
• These changes directly impact on their
  nutritional status and nutrient needs.
• The dramatic physical growth and development
  during puberty further increases their
  requirement for energy, protein and many vitamins
  and minerals.
• Adolescents also experience significant changes
  in their ability to assess and comprehend
  situations and information

• Their desire navigate through complex situations
  and information further spurs the their desire to
  become independent and unique individuals.
• The increased need for energy and nutrients among
  adolescents, therefore results in the need for
  increasing need for autonomy when making food
  choices
• Unfortunately, their immature cognitive abilities
  places adolescents in a very sorrowful and costly
  rewards that may be traumatic for the rest of
  their lives

Changes that occur during adolescence

• Ideally, the development of children ages 12-19
  years old is expected to include predictable
  physical and mental milestones.
• Changes are categorized into physical and
  psychological changes.
