Tube vs. Pipe
  • Why use tube fittings?
  • Tube Smooth directional changes
  • Pipe increased turbulence with elbow fittings
  • Tube generally easier to install vs. pipe
  • Easier to maintain, costs less, performs better

17
Tube vs. Pipe
  • Pipe need special equipment to thread
  • Tube more flexibility so usually fewer
    connections
  • Equates to fewer leak points, lower costs
  • Tube is sized to the O.D.
  • Pipe is sized to a nominal bore
  • Tube is usually installed faster than pipe

18
Tube vs. Pipe
  • Tube nearly in all cases less expensive than pipe
  • Tube generally costs more but in long run saves
    money simple assembly reassembly
  • Tube is more flexible if adjustments need to be
    made can be repositioned
  • Tube holds to higher pressure, generally

19
Tube vs. Pipe
  • Tube has a higher strength-to-weight ratio
  • Tube systems have better flow characteristics
because of smooth internal surfaces, reduces flow
    loss and drag
  • Internal diameters of tube and tube fittings are
very close reducing pressure drops and turbulence

20
Advantages of Tubing Versus PipeTubing can be
more cost effective than pipe for connecting
fluid system components.
  • Ease of Installation
  • Standard wrenches
  • No threading
  • No flaring
  • No soldering or brazing
  • No welding
  • Better Strength to Weight Ratio
  • Threading on pipe reduces the effective wall
    thickness
  • Thinner tubing may be used to same pressure
    rating as pipe
  • Tubing is typically lighter, making it less
expensive to transport, and easier to assemble
    and fabricate

21
Advantages of Tubing Versus Pipe
  • Fewer Connections Required
  • Decreases the number of potential leak points
  • Can be bent around obstructions

22
Lower Pressure Drop
  • Sharp right angle are reduced
  • Smooth transitions reduce turbulence

Result
  • We never said our pricing was the least expensive
  • Compared to the imports, Tylok/Swagelok/Parker
    are all expensive
  • There is a difference in quality

Most common root cause for failures is improper
installation
  • Training is the solution!
  • Many end users do not realize fitting nut should
be tightened a certain number of turns for proper
    installation
  • Most people think tightening the nut until it
    feels good is proper installation

63
Ferrule Engagement on Tube
  • Ferrules should be swaged on the tube
  • Ferrules may rotate on the tube
  • Ferrules should NEVER slide longitudinally along
    the axis of the tube

64
Fittings and Tube
  • Many end users store the fittings in clean,
    climate controlled rooms
  • Tube is often on the ground, dragged across
parking lots and not handled with equal care
  • Tube should be treated as carefully as the
fittings, in particular the outer surface as that
is where the fitting seals on the tube

65
Raiding the fitting cabinets
  • Often time the all compression tee fitting is
    raided for nuts and ferrules
  • Nuts and ferrules can be purchased on arbors
  • These arbor sets are the best way to carefully
    handle the components
  • Additionally, this will help maintain fully
    assembled fittings and organized cabinets

66
A safe leak-free connections starts with
  • 1) Storage and handling of the tube and fittings
  • 2) Proper cutting and de-burring
  • 3) Pre-inspection - tubing, fitting.
  • 4) Proper installation

67
Most Common Reasons for a Leak
  • Tube isnt inserted to counter bore shoulder
  • If there is a leak, ensure proper tube insertion
  • Next, ensure the ferrules have engaged the tube

68
3 Keys to proper installation
  • Ensure tube is inserted to counter bore shoulder
  • Scribe or mark the body hex and nut hex
  • Tighten to proper number of turns, not more, not
    less

Pipe Ends
  • Male NPT ends are protected with tear caps
  • Keep tear caps on fitting until installation
  • Use Teflon tape on MNPT ends
  • Start at first thread and use 2 full wraps
  • Use TySpy for troubleshooting purposes
  • Never use thread sealants on compression ends

87
Safety Precautions
  • Do not bleed the system by loosening the nut of a
    pressurized system
  • Consult appropriate catalog when using fittings
    at elevated temperatures
  • Make sure the tube is inserted to the
step/shoulder inside the fitting counter bore
  • Mark the body hex and nut hex to visually inspect
    proper number of turns
  • Do not mix materials
  • Always hold the body and rotate the nut

88
Safety Precautions
  • Avoid disassembly of unused fittings
  • Consider using inserts for soft or thin wall
    tubing
  • Wall thickness selection should be followed from
    page 44
  • Careful handling of tube to avoid draw marks,
    nicks scratches
  • Leave length of straight tubing between a tube
bend and the fitting. A tube bent too close to
fitting may be a source of leakage.

89
Tylube, Gap Gages
  • Once assembled, no need to verify ferrule
    penetration on the tube
  • As long as fitting was assembled properly system
    will provide leak proof seal
  • Gap gages only to be used on initial make up
  • Upon proper make up, ferrules should be engaged
    in tube
  • Tylube is recommended 5/8 and up

Stainless Steel CS-Lok Tube Fittings with CBC-Lok
nuts (non-black nuts)
Example SS-8-SMC-4-DN
  • To order Stainless Steel CS-Lok tube fittings
with the stainless (non-black) nuts, simply add
the designator DN at the end of the part number
  • The suffix DN indicates that we used a normal
Stainless Steel (CBC-Lok) nut, not the Moly
    Coated Black (CS-Lok) nut

Potential customers..
  • How much do you sell in pressure gages?
  • How much do you sell in tube?
  • Of these current customers how many buy tube
    fittings from you?

145
Distributors
  • Standard lead time for a non-stock item is at
least 4-6 weeks. If you can project future usage
on uncommon items, we can advise production and
    keep them in stock.
  • If common or uncommon items will be ordered
consistently in large quantities, please advise.
  • Communication between us will help keep product
in stock and cut down on lead times.

Things to remember
  • Swagelok attitude toward their customers helps
    our cause
  • Tube fittings are referred to, treated and
handled like diamonds, rubies and emeralds
  • It will be work getting CBC-Lok/CS-Lok specified
at end users, but profitable and worth your
    efforts
  • Remember and sell the Cullen B. Crawford story

150
Things to remember
  • Swagelok sells product on quality, not price
  • Tylok sells product on quality, not price
  • Dont underestimate the competition
  • Simply ask your customer is they use Swagelok
tube fittings if they do Tylok could save them
    money
