Title: SAE and Special Needs Students

1
SAE and Special Needs Students
2
Do special students have SAEs?
  • All agricultural education students, whether they
or normal or classified as special education,
    should have a SAE program!
  • However, modified SAE programs may need to be
    developed for special students.

3
Entrepreneurship
  • Special students may need school-based SAE
    programs.
  • These SAE programs may need to be limited in
    scope.
  • Milk jug greenhouse
  • Bottle Biology
  • Square foot garden
  • Small aquarium
  • Bench space in the greenhouse

4
Placement
  • Some special needs students do very well in
placement performing repetitive or simple task
and take great pride in their work.
  • When placing special need students be honest and
    up-front with the potential employer
  • Special need students may require more frequent
    visits.

5
Placement...
  • Often there are special teachers in the schools
who help with placing special needs students
  • Some special students may need to have a non-paid
    at-school placement
  • greenhouse assistant
  • tool room attendant
  • animal feeder
  • grounds maintenance

6
Research SAE
  • Special students can perform simple experimental
    projects
  • What happens if plants receive different amounts
    of water daily?
  • Do fertilized plants grow bigger than
    non-fertilized plants?
  • What type of soils do plants grow best in?
  • Which plant parts are best for growing cuttings?

7
Minor SAE components
  • Any student can perform supplementary tasks. A
teacher could decide to allow X number of
supplementary tasks to count as a SAE program for
    special students.
  • A teacher could also use exploratory activities
    for the SAE

8
Working with special students
  • Consider paring the student with a buddy
  • Use a See-Say-Do approach in teaching
  • Demonstrate what to do
  • Have the student explain what to do
  • Have the student do the task under your
    supervision

9
Special Needs Legislation
  • The federal Education for All Handicapped
Children Act (1975), stated that all handicapped
children are entitled to a free and appropriate
education in the least restrictive environment.
This led to the mainstreaming of many students
    into agricultural classes.

10
Special Needs Legislation
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (1990), forbids
    discrimination against otherwise qualified
individuals on the basis of a physical or
mental handicap. The act is also designed to end
most physical barriers to disabled persons in
employment and in the use of accommodations,
    transportation, and telecommunications.
