What is a Vowel?

• Based on sound - not letters
• Air flows freely through the mouth
• Common vowels used - A, E, I ,O, U
• Sometimes Y is used as a vowel as in such words
  as hymn or myth
• Vowel Pronunciation

What a vowel is NOT.

• Letters that are not vowels are known as
  consonants.
• Air is closed off partially or completely
• Common consonants are - B,C,D,F,G,H,J,K,L,M,N,P,Q,
  R,S,T,V,W,X,Z
• Sometimes Y is a consonant

• Short A sound
• Words like apple, cat, sand
• Long A sound
• Words like lake, cupcake, communicate
• How do you know the difference?
• Words with the long A say the letter name in
  the word. Words with the short A dont.

• Short E sound
• Words like net, web, help
• Long E sound
• Words like sheet, eat, teen
• How do you know the difference?
• Words with the long E sound say the letter name
  in the word. Words with the short E dont.

• Words like igloo, if, important
• Long I Sound
• Words like ice, itinerary, light
• How do you know the difference?
• Words with the long I sound say the letter name
  in the word. Words with the short I dont.

• How do you know the difference?
