  • What used to be known as footnotes are now
    called parenthetical citations are found in the
    text.
  • Anytime you use material from another source you
    must use a citation.
  • You must have 1 citation for each source on your
    reference page.

3 types of in-text citations
  • Paraphrased material- does not use any of the
    authors wording, but explains the concepts or
    ideas in your own words.
  • Quotes of fewer than 40 words- uses the authors
    exact words.
  • Quotes of 40 or more words- uses a lot of the
    authors exact words.

2 ways to paraphrase
  • When you do not name the author in your sentence.
    Example The question is whether to exist or
    not (Shakespeare, 1640).
  • When you name the author in your sentence.
    Example Shakespeare (1640) said the question is
    whether to exist or not.

  • Author in the sentence. Example Shakespeares
    words to be or not to be have stood the test of
    time.
  • Author not in the sentence. Example The words
    to be or not to be (Shakespeare, 1640) have
    stood the test of time.

How to include page numbers
  • If you are paraphrasing or quoting material from
    a specific page you may wish to include a page
    number.
  • After the year in your citation add a comma, a
    space, then a lower case p a period, another
    space and the page number.
  • Example The words to be or not to be
    (Shakespeare, 1640, p. 36) have stood the test of
    time.
