  communications. By adding mobility to the
  Internet, Nokia creates new opportunities for
  companies and enriches the everyday lives of
  people around the globe.

• Strong volume growth and excellent profitability
  in mobile phones Nokia meets third-quarter
  sales and EPS targets.
• Net sales were EUR 6.9 billion (Nokia Mobile
  Phones 5.6 billion / 82)
• Nokia employed nearly 52,000 people ( Nokia
  Mobile Phone 27,000 )

• Facts
• At the end of 2002, Nokia had 17 production
  facilities in 9 countries around the world.
• RD centers in 14 countries at the end of 2002.
• To think
• How does it work?
• Cost
• Function
• Design
• This issue may be compared and studied with
  another large-scale production company such as
  Boeing or Intel.

ISSUE II Reliability engineering

• Facts
• Had reached 38 of the total mobile phone market.
• 150 million mobile phones produced in 2002.
• Nokia Mobile Phones occupies 82 of the entire
  Nokia group.
• To think
• Double-edged sword, it might be dangerous
• Nokia produces about 30 new products every year.
  If there is one single problem in those products,
  how will Nokia face the problem?
• It will be impossible to recall the product.
  Nokia will have to give up.

• Facts
• In 2002, more than 19,000 people worked in RD
  centers in 14 countries, representing
  approximately 38 of our total workforce.
• Today, Nokia has the leading technology in GSM of
  the world.
• To Think
• Mobile phone is not only a phone. It includes
  functions that brings the mobile phone closer to
  a PC.
• As technology develops, the status of function
  values increases constantly. What are the new
  functions made? How to produce mobile phones that
  can excite and attract the customer?

ISSUE IV Nokia in Korea

• Facts
• One of the few country that has both Production
  factory (in 1984) and RD center. (in 1999)
• Nokias biggest production line, more than 10
  million phones per year.
• RD center in Seoul main research on CDMA
  products. Cooperation with San Diego Product
  Creation Center, and SK Telecom (1999,4)
• To Think
• Nokia in Korea compared to other Korean companies
  such as Samsung or SK Telecom. Even though Nokia
  is the best-selling foreigner company, it is
  still a lot behind Samsung. Why?
