In the beginning
  • Matteo Ricci was born in Macerata, Italy, october
    6th 1552
  • Against his father's wishes, entered the Jesuits
    in 1571
  • Later that year went to roman college for
    mathematics
  • Wanted to expand Asian missions, and went to
    Portugal on may 18th,1577
  • Then onto the west Indies, reaching Goa on Sept
    13th,1578

  • At the end of his training he was assigned to the
    China Mission, and started there in 1583, He
    worked there for 27 years.
  • Made western developments in mathematics for the
    Chinese and in 1584 and 1600 he published the
    first maps of China for the West.
  • Entitled A first textbook of geometry, making him
    a pioneer for mathematics

  • Matteo Ricci brought trigonometry to China
  • Devolved many mathematic and geometrical tools.
  • Ricci produced the first edition of his map of
    the world Great Map of Ten Thousand Countries.

  • He was the first Westerner to be invited into the
    Forbidden city.
  • Was given the title of Superior-General of the
    Jesuits in China
  • The elderly Chief Rabbi of the Jews (in china)
    was ready to cede his power to Ricci, as long as
    he gave up eating pork, but he never accepted the
    position.
