Title: World Malaria Report
1World Malaria Report
- Highlights from countries of the Eastern
Mediterranean Region
2Malaria burden in EMR
- 50 of EMR population live in areas at risk
- 15 million estimated clinical cases per year
- 59,000 estimated deaths due to malaria per year
- 90 cases occur in only 4 countries
- Afghanistan, Yemen, Sudan, Somalia
3- Malaria burden in EMR in 90s increased compared
to 80s - Re-establishment of stable transmission (AFG)
- Frequent epidemics ( Iraq ,Somalia, Yemen, Sudan)
- Breakdown of malaria control programme
- War and civil conflicts
- Resistance of the parasite to CQ
- Resistance of the mosquitoes to insecticides
4- Change of malaria burden since 2000
- (RBM implementation)
- From the available data, it is difficult to
determine how much the Regional burden of malaria
has changed, as HIS in high-burden countries is
weak - However, Success Stories are presented for some
countries/ areas, showing that successful
control has had an impact on malaria disease
burden
5Achievements in high burden countries-1
- Yemen
- Strengthened malaria case management, vector
control, surveillance with active community
participation - Targeted malaria elimination in Socotra Island
and intensified control in Tihama area
6Success story in Scotora Island
Reported slide-confirmed malaria cases and
slide-positivity rates from Socotra Island,
Yemen, 20002003
7Achievements in high burden countries-2
- Sudan

RBM/EMRO is currently working to establish a
strong partnership with GCC countries and other
partners for sustained support to the programme
in Yemen
12Malaria free countries are implementing
strategies to prevent reintroduction of malaria
UAE is implementing activities to be certified
as malaria free country
13We have New technologies for Malaria control
14All malaria endemic countries in EMR developed
strategies to scale up the use of ITNs
15WHO recommendations on use of ACT for treatment
- CQ failure has been documented in all EMR
countries with local PF transmission - Of these 8 countries, 3 countries adopted ACT, 3
more are in the process of policy change
16- Development of new tools
- The development of an effective antimalarial
vaccine has proved more complex and more
expensive than expected - The Malaria Vaccine Initiative supports 10
vaccine projects globally - Medicines for Malaria Venture is coordinating the
development of new drugs . - US 200 million is required to develop one new
fixed-dose ACT
17We have New technologies for Malaria prevention
and control
