3Letter Formation
The students are instructed by the teacher
exactly how to form each of the particular
letters. The teacher models the letters on the
chalkboard and talks about letter formation with
the students. The students began practicing this
skill at the beginning of kindergarten. The
domain on the rubric will evaluate the students
ability to follow the teachers instructions in
forming the letters correctly.
4Letter Slant
Students are taught to include a slant when
composing their letters according to the
handwriting style they are learning. This will
help them as they move into cursive writing. All
letters should have a similar degree of slant.
5Neatness
The students are currently learning self control.
Part of having self control is thinking through
what they will write before they put their pencil
down on the paper. Their self control is
reflected in the neatness of their paper. This
domain will evaluate extraneous markings or
erasures on their paper.
6Relationship to Line
Students in kindergarten and first grade are
practicing penmanship. In order to have the
students become accustomed to writing all of
their letters the same size, they use specially
lined paper. The letters should be formed
according to the line spacing of the handwriting
paper.
