2Gallaudet University is a college for the deaf,
hard of hearing, and hearing students, where they
join together in an unique community to learn,
teach and to create.
3WHO IS GALLAUDET? The school is named after
Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet (1787-1851). He was
born in Philadelphia, Pa. Was founded in 1864
by an Act of Congress, and its charter was signed
by President Abraham Lincoln.
4The Facts
- Traveled to Europe in search of methods for
teaching deaf students. - Gallaudet was impressed by the teachings of Abbe
Sicard, Laurent Clerc and Jean Massieu. Sicard
taught Gallaudet methodology and learned sign
language from Massieu and Clerc. - When Gallaudet returned to America, he founded a
school in New England called American School for
the Deaf.

Gallaudet University is the worlds only
university in which all programs and services are
specifically designed to accommodate deaf and
hard of hearing students.
6PROGRAMS AT GALLAUDET
Students can choose from more than 40 majors
leading to a bachelor of arts or a bachelor of
science degree. Students can also design
their self-directed majors, in which they select
classes from a variety of departments at
Gallaudet or take courses offered at 11 other
institutions of higher learning that are members
of the consortium of Universities of the
Washington Metropolitan Area.
7Enrollment
In the fall of 2003, 1,236 undergraduate
students and 506 graduate students were
enrolled. International students currently
comprise 11 percent of the student body.

9APPLYING TO GALLAUDET
Step 1 Complete the application with a detailed
background and three questions answered in essay
form. 2. 50 application fee. 3.Audiogram a
certified form signed by your audiologist that
determines your hearing loss in detailed format
with a graph of frequency levels. 4. High School
Transcript. 5. 2 letters of recommendation 6.
Test Scores, SAT or ACT.
