WHAT IS PSYOPS?
Psychological Operations are Planned
psychological activities using methods of
communications and other means directed to
approved audiences in order to influence
perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors, affecting
the achievement of political and military
objectives.

BASIC GOALS OF PSYOPS
  • Weaken the will of the enemy
  • Reinforce friendly support
  • Gain the support of the uncommitted

WHO, WHERE AND WHEN ?
PSYOPS are divided into three categories 1
Strategic Psychological Operations (SPO) 2
Crisis Response Psychological Operations
(CRPO) 3 Combat Psychological Operations (CPO)

  • WHO, WHERE AND WHEN ?
  • CDS single authority for employment of PSYOPS
  • Will apply to International Operations only
  • Conducted IAW applicable Canadian and
    international laws, Government of Canada
    policies, and initiatives

  • CDS issues the specific guidance, including
    objectives and Target Audiences
  • Comd CEFCOM approves PSYOPS Products as senior
    advisor for operations to the CDS
  • PSYOPS to be conducted within an Info Ops
    framework
  • May be conducted in conjunction with our allies
    including coalition members, NATO, and the UN

  • To be coordinated within OGDs (Comprehensive
    approach)
  • The CF shall not employ unapproved methods nor
    conduct any activity under the guise of PSYOPS
    that does not conform to policy or doctrinal
    boundaries
  • TFCs have to follow in-theatre approval process
    which often implies multiple organisations to be
    consulted

  • Understand your environment!
  • PSYOPS at the start, as early as possible
  • Can be pre-planned with messages ready to go
  • Troops need to be in the loop
  • Everybody at the tactical level is doing PSYOPS!
  • Know your audience!
