Title: Motivation in Sport

1
Motivation in Sport
  • The desire to participate and perform well

2
Types of Motivation
  • Intrinsic Motivation
  • Internal comes from inside the performer
  • Extrinsic Motivation
  • External comes from the result of some external
    influence
  • Performers can be motivated by a combination of
both of these types of motivation

3
Internal Motivation
  • Internal
  • Self motivation
  • For the performers own personal reasons i.e.
Fun, losing weight, getting fit, beating
opponents, satisfaction in performing well, to
    meet personal goals etc.
  • Often associated with performers not at the top
level who just love playing their sport.
  • Can be associated with elite performers who enjoy
    the competition.

4
External Motivation
  • External
  • Comes from outside the performer
  • Winning cups/trophies
  • Money
  • Personal glory/fame

5
Extrinsic Motivation
  • Teachers and coaches may use extrinsic methods of
    motivation
  • i.e. Swimming/athletics/gymnastics awards
  • GCSE PE Examination grades
  • Make sure you can give some good examples of
intrinsic and extrinsic motivation for the exam.

6
Goal Setting
  • Helps to increase motivation
  • Aiming to achieve lots of small, manageable goals
    can be motivating
  • Achieving goals gives a feeling of satisfaction.
  • Can reduce levels of anxiety
  • Particularly in novice performers
  • Goals focussed on smaller parts of the
performance seem more manageable and less
threatening than trying to work on the whole
    performance.

7
SMARTER GOAL SETTING
  • Specific
  • Very clear goal. Not a vague desire to improve
  • Measurable
  • Easy standards to measure progress against
  • Accepted
  • Agreed by both performer and coach
  • Realistic
  • It must be possible to achieve
  • Time Related
  • Within a stated time period to provide focus
  • Exciting
  • Motivating and interesting
  • Recorded
  • All the results are recorded to monitor progress
    and achievements.

8
Types of Goal
  • Process Goals
  • Concerned with improvements in technique and
    skills and tactics
  • Target Goals
  • Concerned with specific outcomes of the
performance i.e. achieving a personal best time
for the 100m, or scoring a certain number of
    goals in a season.

Both types of goal may be used at the same time.
i.e. to improve a PB distance in the long jump a
performer would have to work on his technique.
