Nitrogen Cycle

• Why do we need nitrogen?
• Proteins, nucleic acids
• Nitrogen gas makes up about 78 of the
  atmosphere.
• But, we cant get it from air, only food.

• Processes
• Nitrogen fixation bacteria (in the soil and
  plant roots) convert nitrogen gas to nitrate
  which is taken up by plants
• Ammonification decomposers return nitrogen to
  the soil by breaking down wastes and corpses
• Nitrification Bacteria convert ammonia in the
  soil to nitrites and nitrates
• Denitrification anaerobic bacteria break down
  nitrates returning nitrogen gas to the air
