Title: 222 Ecosystem Recycling

1
22-2 Ecosystem Recycling
  • Biogeochemical cycle water and minerals are
    recycled

2
Water Cycle
  • Processes
  • Evaporation adds water vapor to the atmosphere
  • Transpiration water vapor released through
    plant stomata
  • Precipitation rain, sleet, snow
  • Where is our water?
  • Ground water, lakes, streams, oceans, polar ice
    caps, plants, animals
  • (Review list properties of water that are
    important to living things.)

Nitrogen Cycle
  • Why do we need nitrogen?
  • Proteins, nucleic acids
  • Nitrogen gas makes up about 78 of the
    atmosphere.
  • But, we cant get it from air, only food.

7
  • Processes
  • Nitrogen fixation bacteria (in the soil and
plant roots) convert nitrogen gas to nitrate
which is taken up by plants
  • Ammonification decomposers return nitrogen to
the soil by breaking down wastes and corpses
  • Nitrification Bacteria convert ammonia in the
    soil to nitrites and nitrates
  • Denitrification anaerobic bacteria break down
nitrates returning nitrogen gas to the air
  • (Review What type of relationship exist between
    bacteria and plant roots?)
