In 1577 Queen Elizabeth I commissioned three men
to sail around the world. On November 15, 1577,
under the command of three captains, Sir Francis
Drake, John Winter, and Thomas Doughty, the
"Queen's Corsair" set sail from Plymouth to the
Spanish-controlled Rock of Gibraltar

                            The Golden Hind -
Perhaps(From the Hondius Broadside map of circa
1595) Late in 1577, Francis Drake left England
with five ships, ostensibly on a trading
expedition to the Nile. On reaching Africa, the
true destination was revealed to be the Pacific
Ocean via the Strait of Magellan, to the dismay
of some of the accompanying gentlemen and
sailors. Still in the eastern Atlantic, a
Portuguese merchant ship and its pilot - who was
to stay with Drake for 15 months - was captured

sea-captains of all time.He was a hero in the
fight against the Armada and despised as an
upstart by the rich, Drake, really keen in the
hunt for treasure (especially Spanish treasure)
but daring and visionary in exploration.
