4So why do we get so nervous?
- I only get one chance!
- I dont know what theyll ask me!
- What if I dont understand what theyre asking?
- What if they ask a trick question?
- What happens if Im late?
- What if Im wearing the wrong thing?
- What if my hands get too sweaty?
- What if they dont ask me about all the stuff
that makes me stand out? - What if everyone else being interviewed is loads
better than me? - What if my mouth dries up?!

- A matching exercise do you fit with what the
interview needs for the job? - A chance for you to assess them
- A structured, formal conversation
- An art, not a science
- Good chance of getting the job!
- Interviews are the single most effective way to
assess suitability

7Easy-Peasy Initial Preparation
You have been invited to an interview WELL
DONE!
- Check and double-check date / time / location of
interview - Check format of interview or assessment centre
- Not sure? Ring and ask! Even pretend to be a
potential applicant if it helps. Get as much
information as possible about what to expect - Find out if the company actively recruits at your
university - See if they are doing any events at Manchester
that you could go to - (this way you can meet interviewers and get a
more general idea of job at the same time) - Use the Careers Service
- Arrange for a mock interview
- Do you know any friends of friends who work for
the company? - Get in contact with them for advice!

- Create 1 page profile on the company and the
specific job - Become an expert!
- Consider a good number of different examples you
can use about yourself, jot them down -

You can NEVER be too prepared for an interview!

What does that mean?
It means its a skills based interview
Questions will be along the lines of Tell me
about a time when you showed good teamwork/led a
team? So what are the competencies? Planning
organising Humility, Respect Empathy
Interaction Knowledge (Teach First and
subject) Leadership Problem Solving Resilience
Self Evaluation

you do and what was the result ? - Lets use this question for a quick practice -
its one that is bound to come up at some point,
as employers always want to know how you will
work in their team.
17Task 10 minutes
- Split into pairs or threes.
- Take it in turns to be interviewer and
interviewee feel free to probe! - After each person give constructive feedback 2
or 3 points that you feel made them come across
really well / could be expanded.
