HIV and AIDS
The Greatest Humanitarian Crisis
  • More than 28 million people worldwide have died
    due to HIV and AIDS
  • Almost 40 million are currently infected with
HIV, two-thirds of these are in Africa
  • In 2006, 530,000 children were newly infected
    with HIV
  • Every 90 seconds a child dies from AIDS-related
    illnesses
  • 14 million children under 15 years of age are
orphans due to HIV and AIDS

Statistics from UNAIDS December 2006

HIV and AIDS
Affects the Vulnerable Most
  • Because they are sick, parents cant work to feed
    or care for their children
  • Children must leave school to care for their
familys needs - and orphans must fend for
    themselves
  • The elderly must care for orphaned grandchildren
    and extended family
  • Over 60 of orphaned children live in
    grandparent-headed households in Namibia, South
Africa and Zimbabwe and over 50 in Botswana,
    Malawi and Tanzania.

Acting on Faith,
Christians Are Called to Respond
  • The Church can respond to those affected by HIV
and AIDS with the compassionate love of God
  • The Church can provide biblically based education
to prevent the spread of HIV
  • The Church can challenge judgemental attitudes,
fear and incorrect assumptions about people
living with or affected by HIV and AIDS

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and
faultless is this to look after orphans and
widows in their distress . . .
James 127a (NIV)
5
Acting on Faith,
Many Christians Are Already Responding
  • The Church has a presence in rural and
hard-to-reach areas and is already providing
  • Formal health services (including anti-retroviral
    drugs)
  • Care and support at the community level through
    volunteers(including home-based care)
  • According to the World Bank, in 2004 faith groups
accounted for half the education and health care
    provision in sub-Saharan Africa

Take action if . . .
  • You want to turn the tide for a generation
    devastated by HIV and AIDS
  • You care about children and want to see your
blessings multiply for generations to come
  • You believe the Church can be a light in the
    darkness of HIV and AIDS
