Amsterdams Modern Architecture
  • Objective details colorful, concrete, vertical,
    boxish
  • Subjective impression futuristic, cold but
alluring, unafraid of ugliness, in your face
Im grappling with whether these buildings are
more art than home colors imply a love of risk
and Dutch interest in experimentation with new
    forms.

Amsterdams Houseboats
  • Objective details on the water, smaller than
surrounding houses, many windows boat and bike
    are sometimes side by side.
  • Subjective impression the boats turn water into
a homefront privacy might be an issue if I lived
on a houseboat unconventional place to live
unorthodox boat and bike complement each other
in a small and active city.

Amsterdams Stately Neighborhoods
  • Objective impression green trees shiny windows
over 150 years old in summer flowerpots are few
and flowers are blooming and few bikes on
streets in water the canals fill with people.
  • Subjective impression taxes are probably high
well-groomed enclosed and encased façade can
    easily become a playground.

Dominant Impressions(Objective Subjective)
  • Unorthodox and very established residential
    options co-exist in Amsterdam
  • Houses have close contact with the street
  • Passersby would be able to invade privacy
    suggests homeowners awareness of risk
  • Modern homes and boat homes coexist with
    prestigious, established-looking mansions
  • Boats could equal big trouble
  • Someone could literally steal my home
  • Gracious mansions become a fun playground

12
Assertion
  • The dominant impression forms the assertion
  • Characteristics of assertions
  • A CULMINATING THOUGHT you arrive at after youve
considered the dominant impression(s) you have
    about something
  • CONTESTABLE someone could have a completely,
utterly, totally different dominant impression of
Amsterdam and hence make a different assertion
  • Has an argumentative edge that causes the reader
    to ask WHY or HOW.
  • The same thing as a main idea, top wafer on the
oreo cookie paragraph, top piece of bread in the
    ham sandwich.

13
My assertion..
  • Amsterdams residential architecture suggests a
    convergence of new and old.
  • Amsterdams residential homes imply a conflicted
Dutch people, torn between domestic stability and
a love of impulse and risk.
  • I believe Amsterdams residential architecture is
    different and beautiful.

To review, my dominant impressions formed my
assertion
  • I saw stability in the gracious mansions with
    their shining windowpanes and well-groomed
    flowers
  • But moreover, I see rivalry between stability and
impulse in the pictures of the houseboats and
landed houses sitting side by side
  • I also see a rivalry between stability and
impulse in the sense that someone could jump out
of their front door and onto their boathouse
  • Another sign of the rivalry between stability and
impulse is seen in the image of how the gracious
mansions front yards become a figureskating
    playground.
