  • You can eat whatever you want, but you must watch
    how much you eat!

Why is nutrition important?
  • Allows you to manage your diabetes
  • Helps to decrease or prevent future complications
  • Kidney disease
  • Blindness
  • High blood pressure
  • High Cholesterol

When should you eat?
  • People with diabetes should
  • Eat 3 small, balanced meals per day
  • Eat 3 snacks per day
  • This means you will be eating every 3-4 hours!

What should you eat?
  • Must monitor portion sizes
  • Eat foods that are high in fiber (whole grains,
    fruits, vegetables)

Alcohol and Diabetes
  • Drink alcohol in moderation
  • Women no more than 1 drink a day
  • Men no more than 2 drinks a day
  • A drink shot of hard alcohol, 4 oz wine, or 12
    oz beer

Carbohydrates
  • The amount of carbohydrates, not the amount
    sugar, in a food will cause blood glucose to rise

Tips for Decreasing Portion Size
  • Eat off of a smaller plate
  • Eat one less bite at each meal
  • Ask to have half of you meal to go before you
    start eating
