2What have you heard you should not eat when you
have diabetes?
3The Good News!
- You can eat whatever you want, but you must watch
how much you eat!
4Why is nutrition important?
- Allows you to manage your diabetes
- Helps to decrease or prevent future complications
- Kidney disease
- Blindness
- High blood pressure
- High Cholesterol
5When should you eat?
- People with diabetes should
- Eat 3 small, balanced meals per day
- Eat 3 snacks per day
- This means you will be eating every 3-4 hours!
6What should you eat?
- Must monitor portion sizes
- Eat foods that are high in fiber (whole grains,
fruits, vegetables)
7Alcohol and Diabetes
- Drink alcohol in moderation
- Women no more than 1 drink a day
- Men no more than 2 drinks a day
- A drink shot of hard alcohol, 4 oz wine, or 12
oz beer
8Carbohydrates
- The amount of carbohydrates, not the amount
sugar, in a food will cause blood glucose to rise

- 60-70 grams per meal
- 30-40 grams per snack
- Women
- 45-60 grams per meal
- 20-30 grams per snack
