5What is a Pilgrim?
Note
- A pilgrim is someone who goes on a pilgrimage.
This is a journey to a holy place. A pilgrim
did this to honour a Saint or for the good of
their soul. - Some pilgrims travelled to the Holy Land,
however, this was stopped by Muslim Turks in the
11th C. As a result the Crusades began.

- 1st Crusade started by Pope Urban II in 1095
- Aim win back Jerusalem and the Holy Land from
the unbelievers The Muslims - Lords and knights from Christian Europe raised
money and armies to go on the Crusade - Total 9 Crusades

- Why did people go?
- Belief they were doing Gods work
- Pope promised that their sins would be forgiven
- However,
- Some wanted to benefit from the valuable trading
that went on in the Middle East.
