pictures come basically in two different flavors
FAT as a bitmap
Slim as a incremental picture

• (many) dots describe the whole content of
  the picture

• (some) vectors describe links or increments
  map changes in the picture

• B/W dots or at least 3 dots, one per color

• the colors are attributes of the vectors

• the file's size depends of the picture's
  surface and resolution

• the file's size depends of the picture's
  content and complexity

some rules to enhance the quality and the
maintain- ability of your pictures

• avoid bitmaps wherever possible, they produce
  huge files

• avoid scanning, the quality is usually poor

• avoid OLE (embedded links), it needs a strong
  link between source and text

• change at the source wherever and whenever
  possible

• use only widespread formats they (should)
  ensure portability

• all picture sources are a part of the
  documentation, so provide them with the texts
  (at best in a ZIP-file!)

• Microsoft Office
• flow-charts .VSD (Visio)
• graphics / pictures .PPT (PowerPoint)
  unavoidable bitmaps .BMP, .PCX
• dont use Words graphical editor, it generates
  bitmaps!

• Other source-formats
• photographs .JPG, (good rendering)
• technical pictures .DWG, .DGN (only B/W)
  .GIF, .TIF
  (max 16 colors!)
• use Microsoft's .WMF metafile-format to insert
  them into texts!

A few additional hints (based on CS experience)

• Labels in graphics
• If possible try to keep the labels out of the
  graphic
• If not, try to prepare a separate graphic to
  insert in each language version.
• Do not insert blank squares to hide labels in
  another language. The hidden term will come
  back to haunt you sooner or later!

Composite graphics ( most graphics)

• Select each element of the graphic, then Group
  them to be able to size, move them, animate
  them in PPT... If not...

• To edit the graphic select all, ungroup, then
  regroup
