Important Dates of Semester
  • Adding
  • Classes can be added during the first week using
    on-line registration
  • After the first week, or if the class is full,
you must obtain instructor signature and return
    it to advisement
  • Dropping
  • If you are struggling in a class, talk with the
instructor, advisor, or associate dean to see
    what you should do
  • If it is decided to drop a class it must be by
the end of the 8th week of the semester (16 Oct
    2009)
  • Not dropping a class and not completing it
results in a withdraw-fail WF which counts as a
    failing grade
  • Preregistration for next semester
  • Appointments made starting the 3rd week of each
    semester (8 Sep)
  • Registration User Number (RUN) given during
    preregistration and changed each semester
  • Monday Sep 7 and Wednesday 11 Nov are Labor Day
and Veterans Day No classes held
  • Saturday November 21 through Sunday November 29
is Thanksgiving Break No classes held
  • December 14-18 is final exams. Leave only after
    taking all finals

Contractual Agreement
  • The College of Engineering will
  • Provide knowledgeable instructors
  • Teach information in a clear and interesting way
  • Provide teaching assistants / tutors / or
professors office hours to help learn the
    material
  • Provide adequate classrooms and laboratories
  • The student will
  • Understand the importance of a college education
  • Be responsible, dependable and mature
  • Spend appropriate amount of time studying
  • Have proper balance between schoolwork, part-time
work, family, friends, and social activities
  • All syllabi essentially restate this agreement
  • Less learning is obtained when the agreement is
    broken

    be successful in anything
  • Resources needed by a tennis player
  • Tangible
  • Tennis balls, racquet, and court
  • Proper attire such as shoes, shorts, shirts, sun
    visor
  • Coach and/or practicing partner
  • Proper nutrition and sleep
  • Intangible
  • Time to practice

  • Intangible
  • Time set aside to study
  • Desire to be successful in school by
    understanding importance of education
  • Strategy during studying and tests
  • Understanding rules/policies/procedures

9
Grading
  • Grades are earned, not given randomly by the
    professor
  • Earned grades are based on set criteria
  • Example What grade would a ENGR 101 student earn
who received 5/10 for notebook 167/200 for
homework 280/ 300 for lab reports 52/60 on
midterm 64/73 on the final and 2 absences?
  • Notebook 10 Homework/Lab Assign 25 Lab
    Reports 25 Midterm Exam 20 Final Exam 20 3
    deduction for each absence
  • A 90100 B 8089 C 7079 D 6069 Flt
    60
  • Please clearly write your name on a piece of
paper and the solution to this problem and turn
it in, also write down a famous engineer and what
    they were famous for.

10
Grading
  • Solution
  • 5/10 10 5 pts (50) (Notebook)
  • 167/20025 20.9 pts (83.5) (Homework)
  • 280/30025 23.3 pts (93) (Lab Reports)
  • 52/60 20 17.3 pts (87) (Midterm Exam)
  • 64/73 20 17.5 pts (88) (Final Exam)
  • Total points 84.1
  • 2 absences results in -6 pts
  • Final score of 78.1 pts (C)

11
Absences
  • ENGR 101 faculty members during FA 2007 semester
discovered that some students need guidance about
    absences
  • Short term absence
  • What consists of short term absence
  • 1 or 2 class periods but not missing tests (minor
    illness)
  • After the absence return back to class
  • Medium term absence
  • What consists of medium term absence
  • 2 to 4 class periods (approx 1 week) (noticeable
    illness)
  • Email or call professors to inform them of
    noticeable illness
  • Long term absence
  • 4 or more class periods
  • Due to serious illness (broken limb, serious
    accident, appendix rupture, etc.)
  • As soon as possible inform College of Engineering
(618-453-4321) give them your name, illness,
    expected return date
  • Obtain documentation from hospital

12
Absences
  • If you are conscious and because of illness miss
a test inform the professor ahead of time
  • If you are unconscious and miss a test, after
life threatening illness is over call the College
    of Engineering (618-453-4321)
  • If you are too ill to take a test, you are ill
    enough to attend the doctor
  • When people in the workforce and athletes are ill
they put much effort becoming healthy and learn
how to prevent that illness in the future.
Students full time job is studying and need to be
healthy to do well in that job

13
Tutoring
  • Occurs at Thompson Point
  • Math, physics, chemistry, engineering
  • Beneficial if used correctly (discussed in
    following slides)

Tutoring
  • Tutoring sometimes is not used because
  • Feel dumb going to ask for help
  • May have to leave where you are studying to
    obtain help
  • The tutors may not help to much
  • Feel that you truly learn the material better
    without help
  • Tutoring is beneficial if correct principles are
    followed such as
  • Assistance that provides knowledge to truly learn
the material and do well in the course
  • You (or someone else such as parent, government,
etc.) are paying for you to receive understanding
of engineering. Get the most out of your money.
  • When we attend other things (stores, amusement
parks, car dealerships) we always try to get the
most from our money we should in education also
  • Just having a college degree does not mean a good
job and happy life if you dont understand the
material you may lose the job and/or the
organization you work for will suffer

15
Tutoring
  • Which of the following situations provides
knowledge to learn the material and do well in
the course (take 5 minutes in groups of 3)
  • Getting stuck at the beginning of the problem and
your friend tells you what things to write down,
which you blindly do, to solve the problem
  • Getting stuck and trying for 2 hours after which
time you study a different subject
  • Getting stuck and trying for another 15 minutes
and then receive help and then redo the problem
    after receiving help
  • Trying problems and then after getting stuck
using the answers to the problems and write down
    the correct answer
  • Photocopying someone elses problems and changing
    their name to yours
  • Trying all the problems and completing many of
them yourself for 1.5 hours and then meeting with
friends when you go over the problems and
determine which ones were done incorrectly, why
they are incorrect, and redoing them correctly
  • Trying the problems and then after getting stuck
using the answers to understand how the problem
should be solved and then solving the problem
    completely by yourself
  • Giving a review of the math course you are all
enrolled in and you know well receiving a review
of physics from a person in the course who is
    doing well in it

16
Tutoring
  • Correct answers are 3, 6, 7, 8
  • Dont be afraid to use tutoring
