When comparing
  • Thumbshots
  • The new Thumbshots Ranking Tool allows you to
perform your own comparisons, and displays the
results visually, making it easy to see both the
rankings and comparative positions of pages in
search engine results. URLs are represented by
small circles, and these circles are connected by
a line if the page appears in both engines you're
testing. Mouse over a circle and the full URL of
the page is displayed. (Sherman, Searchengine
    watch, April 18, 2004)

4
When comparing
  • While the comparative results are interesting,
they aren't always exactly the same as you'll see
when doing a search directly on a particular
engine. According to Stephen Lim, Executive
Director of Thumbshots.org (the folks who created
the tool), results may vary due to your locality,
or from the tool hitting different data centers.
(Sherman, Searchengine Watch, April 18, 2004)

Citation indexing
  • Authoritative articleAuthoritative work.
  • Cited references records and journal article
    records.
  • Tracking back who cited who?
  • Scholarly communication biggest network.
  • Research and assessment of topics and
    disciplines.
  • Why useful for your RLS?

6
Citation Indexing
  • The power of citation searching lies in the
capacity to take a seminal article and uncover
who the author was influenced by (who was cited)
and go forward in time to discover how that
seminal research affected newer works (who is
citing it). ISI (a Thomson business, formerly
Institute for Scientific Information) has allowed
such techniques to be used by serious searchers
for years by providing the means of searching for
known articles or authors in the "cited
    reference" field of ISI's citation
    indexes.(Carol Tenopir)

7
Citation indexes
  • Citation Analysis
  • A. What are the most important journals?
  • B. Is this researcher important?
  • C. Are we connecting to others?
  • D. How good is this collection?

8
On Dialog
  • The Social SciSearch database is an
    international, multidisciplinary index to the
literature of the social, behavioral, and related
sciences, produced by Thomson Scientific. Social
SciSearch contains all of the records published
in the Social Sciences Citation Index.
  • Social SciSearch offers some unique information
retrieval techniques. In addition to the more
    conventional methods, Social SciSearch offers
citation indexing, which permits searching by
cited references. For records added since March
1991, author keywords and KeyWords PlusTM can
    also be searched.

On Dialog 2
  • SciSearch A Cited Reference Science Database is
an international, multidisciplinary index to the
    literature of science, technology, biomedicine,
and related disciplines produced by Thomson
Scientific. SciSearch contains all of the records
published in the Science Citation Index (SCI),
    plus additional records in engineering
    technology, physical sciences, agriculture,
    biology, environmental sciences, clinical
medicine, and the life sciences.SciSearch indexes
all significant items (articles, review papers,
    meeting abstracts, letters, editorials, book
reviews, correction notices, etc.) from more than
    6,100 international scientific and technical
    journals.
  • SciSearch is distinguished by many important and
    unique characteristics. Journal evaluation and
selection is conducted on an ongoing basis. Many
factors are considered when evaluating journals
for coverage, ranging from the qualitative to the
    quantitative. The journal's basic publishing
    standards, its editorial content, the
international diversity of its authorship, and
the citation data associated with it, are all
    considered.
  • Another important feature of SciSearch is
citation indexing. Citation indexing allows for
the searching of cited references. Since January,
1991, author abstracts, author keywords, and
KeyWords PlusTM were added as searchable fields
    on SciSearch.

Two powerful commands
  • S CRcited reference
  • S CAcited author
  • S cabenoit g
  • S crbenoit g, 2003
  • S aurichards p
  • Note The command Expand is useful here for
    names.
  • SELECT CRJOHNSON WG, 1995?

11
Controversy?
  • Is this researcher better than this one?
  • Do you cite?
  • Why do you cite?
  • If scientific research is based on collaboration,
that collaboration should be reflected on the
    citation network.

12
ISI
  • In 1997 the reach of citation searching increased
dramatically when ISI introduced ISI Web of
Science, now part of ISI Web of Knowledge. It
reflects the interrelated "web" of scholarship
whereby a user-friendly web interface made
citation searching accessible to end users. Web
of Science is already popular in university
libraries, and ISI is hoping the additional
functionality offered under ISI Web of Knowledge
will build on that popularity by providing
additional content sources and databases, plus
cross-file searching, beginning in December 2001
    (see www.isinet.com).(Tenopir, Carol)

Citation Searching considerations
  • Inclusion of foreign research
  • Second, Third, Fourth author
  • Social Sciences
  • Humanities
  • Hard Sciences
  • Citation Mining

Web of Knowledge
  • Available at Simmons GSLIS
  • One aspect of it is the Web of Science, an
enhanced web version of the Institute for
    Scientific Information's citation indexes,
including the Science Citation Index, the Social
Sciences Citation Index, and the Arts and
Humanities Citation Index. The Web of Science
measures the impact of particular journals and is
one of the sources used by the National Research
Council to rank graduate programs. Our Web of
    Science subscription includes citations and
references from articles in more than 8,000 high
    quality, peer-reviewed journals published from
1994 to the present. In addition to articles,
other document types indexed are letters,
    corrections, additions, editorials, and reviews.
The Web of Science provides complete
    bibliographic data, searchable author abstracts,
    and cited references.

Journal Impact Factor
  • What would you say if you discover that there is
actually a way to measure the impact that a
journal has on a certain field? What are the
implications of this for collections and
    searching?
  • Library Quarterly vs. Library and Information
    Science Research
  • Library Journal vs. Library Trends
