Why did Europeans Come to America?

• One aim in particular motivated Europeans to come
  to America The desire to win wealth through
  trade.
• By the 1400s Europeans developed seaworthy
  vessels and other technologies which would enable
  them to cross the Atlantic.

How Europeans Lived

• Europeans depended heavily on farming.
• Half of all Europeans were peasant farmers.
• They established strict hierarchies, or systems
  with many levels to keep society organized.
• God was placed at the top of the hierarchy then
  often king or monarch.
• In the family, fathers were seen as the head in
  this male-dominated patriarchal society.

Competition for Trade

• Countries such as Spain, Portugal, France, and
  England were all engaged in competition for
  trade.
• Since land and resources were scarce in Europe,
  foreign markets seemed very appealing to
  Europeans.
• By the 1400s expeditions of discovery revealed
  sea routes which could offer greater profits.
