Respiratory System Functions

• Breathing- movement of chest that allows air into
  the lungs and removes waste gases
• Respiration- using O2 to release the energy of
  glucose for cell use
• Produces CO2 as a waste gas

Organs

• Pharynx
• Back of throat
• Larynx and Trachea
• Larynx- aka voice box
• Contains vocal cords
• Trachea- passageway for air to the lungs
• Cartilage rings to hold it open

• Bronchi
• Passageways into each particular lung
• Lungs
• Filled with tiny sacs- alveoli- where gas
  exchange takes place

Breathing

• Muscles
• Between ribs
• Diaphragm
• Changes in air pressure

Disorders and Diseases

• Infections
• Cold, virus (influenza), pneumonia
• Bronchitis
• Bronchial tubes swell, too much mucus
• Emphysema
• Alveoli enlarge and dont snap back
• Less oxygen
• Mostly by smoking

• Often from smoking
• Asthma
• Shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing
• Bronchial tubes contract

• nephrons
• Ureters carry it to bladder
• Bladder stores it
• Urethra carries it out
