Determining the Number of Years in the Mentor
Program

• During the first year, teachers should be able
  to

• Know school routines and procedures
• Design lesson plans that make subject matter
  meaningful to students
• Describe student progress in report cards
• Facilitate parent teacher conferences
• Develop classroom management skills

Mentor Roles Responsibilities

• Maintain professional and confidential
  relationship
• Participate in required training sessions
• Help develop training modules
• Complete required forms
• Attend meetings with beginning teachers and
  mentor coordinators

Mentor Roles Responsibilities

• Provide support guidance to assigned novice
• Acclimate new teacher to school and community
  culture
• Observe beginning teacher once a week
• Provide feedback about observed teacher
  performance in a timely manner
• Model appropriate classroom and professional
  behaviors

Mentor Qualifications

• 5 years of teaching experience
• Certified in the area currently practicing
• Latest evaluation is positive
• Committed to working with another teacher
  willing to make the time

Identification Process

• Submit completed application form to Hatsa Office
• Be interviewed by principal, regional mentor
  coordinator, Hatsa coordinator
• Once identified, matched with beginning teacher
  immediately
