Who is LUNAR?
  • The Livermore Unit, National Association of
Rocketry (LUNAR) is a rocket club that is
organized to supply a safe, educational and legal
means of flying model and high-powered rockets in
    Northern California.
  • LUNAR is open to rocketry hobbyists of all ages
to further the sport and science of hobby
rocketry within the NAR (National Association of
Rocketry) safety codes. These safety codes have
allowed hundreds of millions of model rocket
launches by hobbyists since the late 1950s
    without serious injuries.
  • LUNAR encourages the development of all club
members knowledge and expertise in the area of
rocketry. We engage in scientific and educational
    activities.
  • LUNAR was formed in 1993 and is the largest
    rocket club in the country.

  • San Lorenzo HS finished 11th.
  • Student Launch Initiative (SLI)
  • NASA sponsored program to involve HS students in
real life experience of submitting a proposal,
building and flying an experiment on a high
powered rocket to 1 mile high.

7
LUNAR Safety!
  • LUNAR has flown over 25,000 rockets and has an
excellent safety record for over 13 years
    because
  • LUNAR follows the NAR Safety codes and all
Federal, State, and Local government regulations
    for launching rockets.
  • LUNAR has policies and procedures that are
strictly followed to ensure a safe launch.
  • All rockets are inspected for proper construction
    and preparation before being flown.
  • LUNAR has the proper safety and launch equipment.
  • The people running the launches have decades of
    experience.

8
Reference Letters
  • LUNAR has received letters of recommendation
    from
  • Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Marshal
  • Orvis Cattle Company (Snow Ranch high powered
    rocket launch site)
  • LUNAR has also received letters from individuals
    who host Tripoli club launches
  • Maddox Dairy Farms
  • Hundreds of thank you letters from numerous youth
    groups, schools, and community organizations.

9
LUNAR Needs Your Help
  • There are many youth groups and students who are
waiting to fly their projects at LUNAR launches.
LUNAR would like to specifically request the
    following
  • LUNAR would like to continue to fly from
Robertson Park while we look for a new launch
    site.
  • Be allowed to host Team America Rocketry
    Challenge (TARC) teams.
  • LUNAR is currently investigating over 40 possible
sites in Northern California. We would
appreciate your assistance in finding a new site.
    Specifically
  • A letter of reference to aid in finding a new
    venue.
  • Assistance from LARPD staff in locating a venue,
especially identifying zoning and land-use issues.

What is Model Rocketry?
  • Model Rocketry or Sport Rocketry as it is
sometimes called, is a fun and rewarding hobby.
  • Participants in the hobby construct their own
rockets, then launch them using factory-made
rocket motors. After a successful recovery, the
rocket is then reloaded with another motor and
    launched again.
  • This hobby is safely enjoyed by people of all
    ages around the world
  • It is an excellent educational tool for teaching
    chemistry, physics, and aerodynamics

13
Anatomy of a Model Rocket
  • Model rockets are constructed with such materials
as cardboard, plastic, and balsa wood
  • These rockets may be flown over and over simply
by replacing the used motor with a fresh one.

14
Description of a Model Rocket Flight
  • The rocket is boosted a motor that is
electrically ignited. The rocket is guided by a
launch rod until the rocket has enough speed for
    the fins to stabilize it.
  • When the engine propellant has exhausted, the
delay charge burns. During this period, the
rocket is coasting to its peak altitude.
  • The motor's ejection charge activates, ejecting
the nose cone and deploying the recovery device,
which is usually a streamer or a parachute.
  • Finally, the rocket coasts back to ground and can
    be reused.

15
Safety Review ( 1 of 2)
  • During the September 19th launch, a rocket was
launched with a delay that was too long and the
rocket came down in the dry brush and then the
ejection charge went off starting the fire.
  • We have taken the following actions
  • Reviewed Fire permit with Livermore-Pleasanton
    Fire Marshal
  • Added water pumpers and fire rakes as part of
    standard launch equipment
  • Increased the number of Fire Extinguishers
  • Reviewed layout of launch area
  • Determine fire lane to Arroyo area is not blocked
    in future
  • Added direct phone number to Fire Department to
    Launch Handbooks
  • Modified Safety inspection procedure to review
motor delay is appropriate for each rocket

16
Safety Review ( 2 of 2)
  • A complaint was sent to LARPD about a rocket that
landed on the roof of a nearby home.
  • These steps have been taken to reduce this
    occurrence
  • Rocket inspection now requires contact
information to be clearly written on the rocket.
  • Registration now requires Flyer contact
    information.
  • Reduce the maximum altitude from 1500 to 1200.
  • Reduce the size and weight of rockets from
    mid-power to low power rockets.

17
LUNARs Positive Community Influence
  • LUNAR connection to Livermore is providing
community services to Livermore residence and
    surrounding areas
  • LUNAR is the only rocket club that launches in
    Northern California

18
