10Treason
- In law, treason is the crime that covers some of
the more serious acts of disloyalty to one's
sovereign or nation. - Historically, treason also covered the murder of
specific social superiors, such as the murder of
a husband by his wife (treason against the king
was known as high treason and treason against a
lesser superior was petit treason). - A person who commits treason is known in law as a
traitor. - Such a person may also be colloquially termed a
turncoat.

- They were angry because all the tax went to the
British, not the colonists, and that was not
fair. - Some colonists felt that Britain had no right to
tax them because colonists were not represented
in Parliament. - They felt this violated their rights as British
citizens

16The Sons and Daughters of Liberty
- In 1756, in Boston and other cities and towns,
the coming of the American Revolution was speeded
by mechanics, merchants, and artisans who
organized against British tyranny. - Calling themselves the Sons of Liberty, they set
up committees of correspondence in the colonies
to spread detailed news about British attacks on
their liberties. - They focused on the general search warrant, which
allowed customs officers to invade and ransack
their homes and offices at will.

They spun their own thread and wove their own
cloth instead of buying British cloth.

- In 1766 so many colonists opposed the Stamp Act
that Parliament voted to repeal the Act, or take
it back. - How ever, Parliament passed the DECLARATORY ACT.
- It said that Britain had the full power to make
laws for the people of America in all cases. - This new law worried many colonists.
