Simple Subjects and Predicates (Verbs)
  • The subject tells whom or what the sentence is
    about.
  • The predicate tells what the subject is or does
    or what happens to the subject.
  • If the subject is simple and the predicate is
    simple, each is only one word.
  • The violent storm battered the sailboat.
  • The English class passed the vocabulary test.

Subject Complements
  • Complements are words that complete the meaning
    of verbs.
  • Two different types of complements (both require
    linking verbs)
  • Predicate adjective THINK DESCRIBE describes
    or modifies the subject

  • Predicate nominative THINK RENAME a noun or
    pronoun that identifies, renames, or defines the
    subject.
  • Mount Everest was their destination.

    what, or for whom an action is done.
  • Bring, give, hand, lend, make, send, show, teach,
    tell, and write
