The City of Wuhai (??)

• Located in Eastern Inner Mongolia, by the Yellow
  River and close to the desert.
• Founded 30 years ago, because of major coal
  sources in the region.
• Apart from coal, also major minerals and
  limestone resources exists.

• 500 000 citizens
• The city is totally dependent on the coal based
  industries.
• 10-15 of Chinas total coal resources are found
  in the city.

• In the rest of the world mainly used for
  increasing purity of steel
• Around 100 companies in China estimately half
  of them in the Wuhai region.

Environmental Problems

• Main problem of CaC2 manufacturing is the
  particulate matter, PM small dust particulates
  in the air.
• PM causes breathing problems for humans and can
  cause cancer.

Ways of Solving the Problems

• Treating PM is not very difficult, and there are
  four main methods
• Electrostatic filters
• Bag filters
• Scrubbers
• Cyclones

Sketch of Solutions

• Most important task is to get a working filter
  for the furnace
• Bag/Electrostatic filter combined with a heat
  exchanger to use the energy in the hot
  (700-1000ºC) gas.
• The PM then becomes solid waste, that can be used
  for cement production.
