Title: Maheswaram Mandal, Ranga Reddy District: GIS Asset Management, power availability assessment and los

1
Maheswaram Mandal, Ranga Reddy District GIS
Asset Management, power availability assessment
and loss reduction options
T. Radha Krishna Reddy , GECE January 21, 2003
2
Objectives
  • To bridge the policy gap between the water and
    energy sectors
  • To provide accurate and current data on
    distribution system
  • To improve the quality and reliability of power
    supply

3
Activities
  • Geographic information system and asset
    management system
  • Pumpset survey
  • Technical loss estiamtion
  • HVDS upgrade
  • Method for technical loss reduction
  • Refurbishment of network

4
Approach
  • Regular (daily) interaction with APCDCL from
assistant engineer to director technical level
  • Standard software (PowerNet application) utilized
  • Completed and validated GIS asset inventory data
maps shared with APCDCL field staff
  • Assisted in HVDS project formulation for farmer
    and utility demonstration
  • Assisted in pilot HVDS implementation for 2
    transformers

5
Status Of Existing Electrical Network
  • No of 11kV feeders
    2
  • No of Distribution Transformers 89
  • 11kV line
    52.51km
  • LV line
    154.79km
  • No of Agricultural Pumpsets(8/02) 1203
  • 11kV Voltage Drop
    10.32
  • Energy Loss (Technical)
    16.20
  • Technical and Commercial Losses( total) 33.56

6
Quality of Power Supply
  • No of 11kV feeders
    2
  • No of 11kV feeders with voltage drop with in
    permissible limits 0
  • Total no of LV feeders
    111
  • No of LV feeders with voltage drop with in
    permissible limits 39
  • No of Pumpsets
    1203
  • No of Pumpsets with voltage drop within
    permissible limits 71

7
Existing Voltage Profile at Pumpsets
8
Case Study Sample from both feeders
9
Causes for High Voltage Drop
  • Lower size of Conductor
  • Long LV lines
  • Low Power Factor
  • Unauthorized Customers
  • Un-authorized additional loads by existing
    customers
  • Non Standard Joints in the line, particularly at
    the tension points.

10
Revisiting the Vicious Cycle
11
Impact of Low Voltages
Efficiency of Pumpset falls by 1.5 for 5 drop
in Voltage
12
Works Proposed in the Project
  • High Voltage Distribution System
  • Strengthening of 11kV network
  • Refurbishment of 11kV network

13
Basic Design Parameters of HVDS
  • One transformer for 2 to 4 pumpsets
  • Separate Transformers for non-agricultural loads
  • Maximum length of LV line is 300 meters
  • Independent AB cable for each pumpset direct
    from transformer

14
Advantages of HVDS
  • Technical loss will be reduced due to reduction
    in LV line lengths(I2R)
  • Reduction in Commercial losses since it is
difficult to tap from AB cable (elimination of
    unauthorized customers and theft)
  • Pumpset efficiency will be improved due to better
    voltages

15
Advantages of HVDS
  • No need to use Voltage stabilizers, which results
    in improvement in power factor
  • Reduction in failure rate of transformers
  • Reliability of supply will be improved since any
fault in HV system will be immediately known at
    the Substation / Controlling Officer.
  • Voltage fluctuations will be avoided
