What is a fraction?
  • A fraction represents a part of a whole or part
    of a set.
  • Example
  • The pizza slice is one part of the whole pizza.

  • There are two numbers in a fraction.

  • The top number is called the numerator.
  • The bottom number is called the denominator.

  • The numerator tells how many parts of the whole
    or set you have.
  • The denominator tells how many parts the whole or
    set is divided into.

  • The circle is divided into 4 equal parts, or
    fourths.
  • Each part is one-fourth of the whole circle - one
    part out of four parts in all.
  • Two parts out of four parts would be
  • Two-fourths or one half

    part out of two parts in all.
  • Two parts out of two parts would be
  • One whole or 2/2 or 1
