3What is Division?
The mathematical definition of division is to
separate a quantity of things into equal groups.
It is actually a shortcut for subtraction. If the
problem asks what is 6 divided by 2. What it
is really saying is how many sets of 2 can be
subtracted out of 6?
4 The division problem can be written in two
different ways

5An example of a division word problem Mary
bought 8 plants. She wants to plant two in each
container. How many flower pots will she need?
6Mary will need four flower pots.
7Mrs. Scott bought a box of pencils and wanted to
give each cougar paw winner two pencils. The box
had 25 pencils in it. How many students could she
reward with pencils?
8There are enough pencils for twelve students to
each have two with one pencil left over.

10Bill needs plates for his birthday party. There
are 10 plates in each package. He is inviting 34
friends to his party. How many packages of plates
should he buy?

plates. Bill must buy 4 packages of plates and
he will have 6 plates extra.

- There are 25 pieces of candy in the package. Sam
and his 5 friends are going to share the candy.
How many pieces will each friend receive? - The fourth grade classes are going on a field
trip. Mrs. Smith needs to order the buses. Each
bus can seat 36 students. There is a total of 85
fourth graders. How many buses do they need? -
