• He was captain for the French Army at the age of

• He was chosen commander-in-chief of the National
  Guard on July 26, 1789

• During the battle he got wounded at the
  Brandywine
• He was made a major general without pay
• He lead the French Army during the war

• He died in Paris on May 20, 1834
• He refused to be the president of the new
  republic
• Before he died in 1834 he hoped for a pure
  republic in France

• There a lot of streets named after him in New
  York, Virginia, and Illinois
• There are statues of him in New York, New York,
  Washington DC, and Baltimore, Maryland
