Opening Remark Data Quality

Data quality is a key issue to realize
successful collaborative product
development. Use of 3D engineering systems
(CAD/CAM/CAE/CG/CAT) is increasing, but its
merit is not maximized mainly caused by
unsuccessful data share.

There is a NIST report based on detailed
interview to US transportation industries
(Aerospace, Automotive, Ship Building) that
full use of STEP will eliminate billions of
dollars of economy loss. But, its key
assumption is successful STEP based data
exchange or share. But actually, STEP based
data exchange between companies frequently
leads to unsuccessful result mainly caused by
low quality data.

The industry which focused on this issue first
was automotive industry. They collaboratively
developed SASIG PDQ Guidelines to eliminate
rework in receiver side.It is now accepted as
ISO PAS 26183. JNC for TC184/SC4 is now
developing STEP technology based product data
quality standard focusing on shape with enough
information exchange with SASIG team.

SC4 decided to launch a new WG named WG13(IDQ)
last March for developing principles and
standards regarding Industrial Data Quality
covering SC4 scope. It is already agreed that
WG13 will develop ISO 8000 series standards.

It may be said that the future of SC4 strongly
depends on WG13 activities since data quality
is a big challenge and keen issue for any
manufacturing industry. Today, we will focus on
practical issues rather than research issues on
data quality.
