Parts of Speech

• Each word has a certain job.
• Some words have more than one job, depending on
  how they are used.

Noun (n)

• Person, place, thing, idea
• Examples teacher, dog, room, desk, city, sadness

2. Proper Noun

• Specific noun with a name
• Examples Philadelphia, Africa, Mr. Smith
• Always capitalize!!!!

3. Pronoun

• Word that is used in place of a noun.
• Examples he, she, it, we, they, you, them

• An action or a state of being
• Examples to run, to walk, to think, to feel, to
  do, to make, to be

5. Adjective (adj)

• A word that describes a noun.
• Examples pretty, ugly, tall, fast, slow

6. Adverb (adv)

• A word that describes an adjective, verb, or
  other adverb
• Usually ends with ly
• Examples quickly, slowly, usually
• -LY

7. Conjunction

• A word that connects words and phrases.
• Examples and, but, or, nor, because

8. Preposition

• Relates an object to another word.
• Examples in, on, at, toward, above, below

9. Interjection

• A word or group of words used to express
  surprise.
• Examples Wow!, Ouch!, Hey!, Yes!

10. Article

• Two special words that are only used before a
  noun.
• Examples a/an, the
• An is only used before a word that begins with a
  vowel (a,e,i,o,u).
• Example an apple, an eye

• The boy ran with the dog.
• The girl is good at soccer.
• Mr. Smith is a nice man.
• I really want to go to California.
• Ouch! That hurt me.
• She and Jen are best friends.
