What is Multimedia?

• Multimedia refers to the use of a variety of
  media (video, graphics, etc.)
• Interactive multimedia does not inherently imply
  the nonlinear access feature of a hypermedia
  system.

• No agreed upon definition
• Different types of media presented in a variety
  of formats
• Nonlinear
• An extension of hypertext, random access of
  textual information

Hypermedia is...

• Information represented in a combination of
  formats with a multitude of paths to create an
  environment that affords immediate, yet random
  access to large amounts of information
• Its nature is interactive and exploratory

Hypermedia Cautions

• Fear of hypermedia capabilities used as another
  way to deliver material using traditional methods
• Hypermedia authoring too time consuming for
  teachers
• Costly and complex hardware necessary to run
  systems

Assessment

• Challenging to assess students who are learning
  different things
• Have students create their own hypermedia
  presentations showing what they learned
• Valuable research into student learning and
  learning styles -track where students go in a
  hypermedia system
