2The Year 7 Curriculum
- Year 7 have three lessons of maths each week.
After the first half term two of these will
continue with their maths teacher and the third
will be in an ability set numeracy group.
- The outline of the curriculum is below

Spring Term Fractions Decimals Shape Perimeter
Area Volume Patterns Sequences Functions
Graphs
Summer Term Percentages Ratio
Proportion Angles Probability Statistics
3Vocabulary
- In your booklet there is a list of key words to
compliment the Year 7 curriculum.
A mathematics dictionary is helpful to ensure the
understanding of the meaning of these words. The
links to online dictionaries are included in your
booklet.
4Vocabulary
- Activity 1
- Starting with the word MATHS in the centre of
your sheet how many words can you add at the end,

- HANGMAN
- WORD ASSOCIATION take it in turns to think of
mathematical words which start with the letter
the last word ended with?! - Eg. Add Division Negative Equal
6Estimation
Estimation is a crucial part of mathematics.
Being able to recognise whether an answer is
sensible is a really important skill.
- How do we use estimation in the classroom.?
What is ..
23 x 8
20 x 10
5.78 1.21 2.16
6 1 - 2
200
5
7Estimation
How can you help your child develop estimation
skills?
- When out shopping, why not ask your child to
estimate the cost of your basketif they get it
within 5 they could win a prize!!
Always ask Is your answer sensible?
8Proportion
What can you do in the home to enhance
understanding of ratio and proportion?
- Fairy Cakes
- Serves 4
- 125g Butter
- 150g Sugar
- 3 Eggs
- 300g Flour
If you were making this recipe for 8 people how
much sugar would you need?
9Conversions
Knowledge of different units of measure and how
to convert them is another important maths skill.
- These measurements are all around you in the home
and when you are out and about.
Time Telling the time is a skill some pupils
still find difficult. Ask your child to convert
minutes to seconds, hours to minutes, weeks to
days and so on.
In the kitchen a bottle of coke contains 2
litres, how much is this in centilitres?
10Conversions
Some of these conversions are more
complicated. They require children to convert
from one measurement to another.
Height and Weight Can you convert your height
from meters to feet and inches or your weight
from Kg to stones and pounds?
On holiday we are travelling at 40km/h, how
much is that in miles/h?
At the travel agent we have 100, how many
Euros can we buy, if the exchange rate is 1
1.5?
11Fractions
Many pupils often struggle to understand what a
fraction is. Describe it as part of a
number...or a cake, pizza, packet of sweets etc
- Pupils need to know how to.
- Find a fraction of a quantity
- Find equivalent fractions
- Use equivalent fractions to order fractions
- Add and Subtract fractions
- Multiply and Divide Fractions
- A fraction Wall is helpful when looking at
equivalent fractions, there are some in your
booklet.
12Card Games for Improving Number Skills
- There are lots of games you can play at home to
help improve number skills. - In your booklet there are several examples of
these. Here is one for you to try.
Times tables  Lay two cards down at a time and
multiply the values together. The first
requirement of this game is that they should
answer correctly and the second requirement is
that they can answer quickly. Good times tables
skills have been achieved when your child can
answer correctly as soon as you have lain down
the cards. For extensions to this game please
see your booklet.
