Corbin Elementary Demographics
  • Grades 3 and 4
  • Student population of 399
  • 45 Special needs Students

4
Needs
  • When school began we had 397 students enter our
building in August of 2008. Of those, 55 students
were two grade levels behind in reading.
  • The question
  • How do we meet the needs of all these students?

5
Objective
  • Our goal is to get as many of our students as
possible reading on grade level before they leave
    our building.
  • To select research based programs to address the
    needs of our students.
  • To progress monitor these students to
    proficiency.

6
Universal Screener
  • For the past four years Corbin Independent
Schools has administered the MAP (Measures of
Academic Progress) twice a year. This test is
given in August and March in Reading and Math. We
also screen incoming students who enroll during
    the school year.

7
Universal Screening and Progress Monitoring
  • Scholastic Reading Inventory is administered 4
times per year. Those who are below grade level
take this test monthly to monitor their progress.

8
Plan of Action
  • Administer the MAP test
  • Target the bottom 20 of the population
  • Administer the Scholastic 3 minute assessment to
these students to determine the area of
difficulty in reading The students will begin
    receiving Tier II intervention
  • Place in supplemental Reading Groups with a
    teacher
  • Progress monitor bi-weekly or more often for
    those who need it.

9
Research Based Interventions
  • Students who are two grade levels behind in
reading are placed in Small Reading Groups in
classes of no more than 5 students
  • We use the SRA Reading Laboratories in these
    classes
  • Instruction is with a certified teacher for 40
    minutes daily

10
Progress Monitoring
  • We progress monitor using the Scholastic Reading
Inventory monthly to determine reading Lexile
    levels
  • We administer the Scholastic 3 minute assessment
    bi-weekly which targets word recognition,
    fluency, and comprehension

11
Challenges
  • The scheduling of staff next year means we will
lose 3 teachers in the afternoon who presently
    work with small reading groups
  • Students who come in during the year from county
schools are often behind in reading. These
students must be worked into our groups

12
Future Plans
  • Implement the Reading Mastery program which we
    purchased with ISSP grant funds
  • Analyze Spring Map scores from this year to get a
    head start for next year
  • Determine how we can use the classroom teachers
better in the processsome schedules can be
tightened up to allow extra reading group
    instruction
  • Teachers of reading groups will meet more often
to allow more conversation about what we can do
to help our students who struggle
