Title: MOLECULES FOUND IN LIVING CELLS

1
MOLECULES FOUND IN LIVING CELLS
  • A. INORGANIC MOLECULES - molecules that do not
    contain carbon.
  • 1) Water
  • a) Structure
  • b) Functions
  • 2) Electrolytes

2
  • B) ORGANIC MOLECULES - molecules that contain
carbon. These are complex molecules because of
the branching that occurs with carbon.

3
  • 1) Proteins
  • a) Functions
  • b) Structure - composed of amino acids
linked by peptide bonds. There are 4
    degrees of structure.

4
  • 2) Lipids - also called fats. They include
  • a) triglycerides - the neutral fats that are
used for energy storage, insulation and
    protection.
  • b) phospholipids - they have a phosphate
attached and are important components of
    cell membranes.

5
  • c) steroids - are important components of
cell membranes and some hormones. Examples
    include cholesterol, testosterone and the
    estrogens.
  • d) prostaglandins - modified fatty acids that
    act like hormones.

6
  • 3) Carbohydrates - Cn(H2O)n, carbon and H2O.
    a) Primarily used as an energy source. They
can form polymers . They include mono, di
    and polysaccharides.

7
  • 4) Nucleic acids - DNA and RNA.
  • a) These molecules have our genetic
    information.
  • 5) High energy phosphates. The most common one
    is ATP - adenosine triphosphate.
  • a) This is the energy currency for our cells.
